Locked out in Bed-Stuy: what to have ready

What to tell the dispatcher, what proof of residence a locksmith should ask for, and how a fair price conversation goes on site.

Before you call

Stay calm and check the simple things first: other doors, a window you can safely reach from the inside, a roommate, a super or landlord with a spare. If you rent, your landlord may be the quickest and cheapest way in.

If none of that works, call a locksmith and have your location ready: the street address, which door is locked (street door, vestibule or apartment) and what kind of lock it is if you can see it. Mention anything that changes the job, such as a deadbolt that was locked from the inside or a door that opens outward.

Proof that you live there

A responsible locksmith asks for ID that shows the address, or for proof that you are authorized to be there, before opening a door. That can feel awkward at night, but it protects you and your neighbors. A photo ID with the address, a lease, a utility bill or a message from the landlord are all reasonable.

If you do not have ID with you, tell the dispatcher on the phone. There may be another way to confirm who you are, and it is better to know before the technician is on the way.

Entry and the price conversation

On most residential lockouts the technician will try to open the door without damaging it. If a lock has to be drilled or a cylinder replaced, a fair technician tells you that and explains why before doing it.

You should hear the price on site before any work starts, in plain terms, including any extra for the hour or for a replacement part. If the number changes after the work has begun, or the conversation avoids a number at all, that is a reason to stop and ask questions.
